It's really a chanson that recounts the thoughts of a lower-course "Lady in the port" (fille du port, perhaps a prostitute) who develops a crush on an elegantly attired clear upper-class British traveller (or "milord"), whom she has viewed going for walks the streets from the town several instances (with a wonderful youthful woman on his arm), but
